Operation Characteristic of Synchronous Condenser and SVC for Dynamic Reactive Power Compensation of DC Converter Station

The synchronous condenser and the static var compensator( SVC) can provide reactive support for the converter station,but their dynamic reactive power responses are different because of the different principles. Taking the voltage fluctuation of the DC sending-end system as an example,this paper studied the ability of the reactive power response of two compensation devices and compared their support for transmission power of AC/DC system. Then the reactive power regulation abilities of synchronous condenser and SVC were analyzed and compared when voltage dip and swell occurred. On the basis of which,this paper studied the influence of two reactive compensation devices on the transmission power of AC/DC system during dynamic process. The results show that the synchronous condenser has better reactive output characteristics and voltage regulation ability when AC system voltage sags; because of limited reactive absorbing ability,both synchronous condenser and SVC cannot adjust the voltage to rated value when AC system voltage swells.
