On the Primary Controlling Factor That Causes Disparity of Polymetallic Nodules in the Different Areas of the Eastern Pacific Ocean

Zhao Quanji Liu Fushou Li Zelin Gao Shulan (First Institute of Ocoanography, SOA, Qingdao, 266003)
Based on the investigational data obtained during the cruise DY85 4 made in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This paper summarizes the disparities of polymetallic nodules in the eastern and western areas of the Pacific Ocean, analyzes the factors that cause this disparity with emphasis on the discussion on the relationship of the abundance, grade, rate of cover,Mn/Fe of the polymetallic nodules to the associated sediments, fault zones, volcanoes and irruptive rocks. Among the various factor that cause this disparity ,the primary controlling one has been found to be the materials that are produced by fault blocks, volcanic activity, magmatic and hydrothomal processes as well as their effects on the physical and chemical environments of the sea floor.
