Distribations of Clay Minerals in Surface Sediments From the Changjiang River Subaqueous Delta and Their Affecting Factors

The clay minerals in 65 surface sediment samples from the Changjiang River subaqueous delta were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis technique.It is shown from the analysis results that the clay minerals in surface sediments from the Changjiang River subaqueous delta are composed mainly of illite,chlorite,kaolinite and smectite;the average contents of kaolinite and chlorite in the delta front area are higher than those in the prodelta area,and the average contents of illite and smectite in the prodelta area are higher than those in the delta front area.The clay minerals in the study area are derived mainly from the Changjiang River basin,and the distributions of clay minerals are restricted mainly by the sediment hydrodynamic environment and clay mineral properties.
