Effect of Low Seedling Density Cultivation on Yield and Water Use Efficiency of Hybrid Millet under Rainfed Condition

Water is one of the most limiting factors for the agricultural development of rainfed dryland area,so how to improve water use efficiency is the main problem in this area at preesent.The changes of yield and water use efficiency of hybrid millet variety Zhangzagu No.3 under different seedling densities(75 000 plants / hm2 and 150 000 plants / hm2) in rainfed dryland area of Zhangjiakou were studied in 2013.The results showed that under abundant rainfed condition,the main water service of Zhangzagu No.3 supplied from 0-100 cm soil,the average yield of Zhangzagu No.3 could reach 6 787.78 kg / hm2 under low seedling cultivation density,while conventional variety Jizhanggu No.5 was only 5 518.43 kg / hm2,the former was 23.00% more than the latter,which reached a significant level(P 0.05).In addition,when the seedling cultivation density was 75 000 plants / hm2,the water use efficiency of Zhangzagu No.3 could reach a maximum value of 24.10 kg /(hm2·mm),which was 1.26 times as more as conventional variety Jizhanggu No.5.The low seedling cultivation density of Zhangzagu No.3 is fit for rainfed dryland area of Zhangjiakou.
