Salt and Drought Stress Tolerance in Transgenic Wheat Expressing Betaine Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Gene

Assay for salt tolerance and drought resistance of transgenic wheat expressing betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase,obtained through particle gun method,were conducted under simulated salt/drought stress condition.The results indicated that the transgenic wheat has many obvious advantages over its donor plants,such as the greater germinating ability under osmotic stress up to -0.3 Mpa,the more vigorous development of seedlings,especially the well developed roots under drought stress condition,as well as the improved plasma membrane protection of excised leaf and the lower transpiration rate under field condition.But the water loss rate for excised leaf was not obviously different from its donor control plants.
