Relation Between Trimaran Configuration and Its Wave-making Resistance

Some of the outstanding advantages of Trimaran over conventional mono_hulled and twin_hulled ships have caused ever_growing attention in the development of high performance vehicles. There, however, are still some problems to be tackled to improve its hydrodynamic performances and promote its practical use, such as the relation between the configuration and its resistance. A theoretical method, based on Noblesse's New Slender Ship Theory and the restriction principle of elementary steepness, with expanding some integrands in special functions, is used to calculate the wave_resistance of trimarans. In view of the high efficiency of this method, to ascertain the relationship of the configuration of trimaran and its resistance, and to optimize the configuration and the particulars of the outriggers of trimaran, the optimization methods with the Enumeration and the Genetic Techniques are developed respectively for trimaran. And according to the results of optimization, trimaran model tests are conducted. The comparison between the tests and calculation show that the presented methods are reliable, and some conclusions drawn are basically confirmable to those from systematic model tests by other researchers.
