Research on passive acoustics-guidance system based on vector hydrophones

Any underwater moving target will generate radiation noise. After a terminal-guidance rocket-propelled depth charge sinks in water,it can receive the noise generated by moving targets using an underwater acoustic detection system installed at the head. By correlation processing of the received noise, the bearing information relative to the depth charge can be obtained. At this time the sinking direction of the depth charge can be adjusted continuously to approach the targets using its steering engine that is installed at the tail. The research is of great significance to improving the percentage of hits of depth charges. In this paper a new method is proposed,which applies a vector hydrophone array to the receiving one of the passive direction-finding sonar system, and the direction-finding theory, mathematical model as well as the simulation experiments are also presented. The experiment results show that the proposed passive direction-finding system can be realized with a single DSP chip; the mean square root error is less than 2 degrees, thus it has several advantages such as high direction-finding accuracy, small volume, light weight, lower cost as well as being able to work at low frequency and wide band.
