Fast multipole acoustic BEM and its application

The fully populated system matrix formed with the conventional boundary element method(CBEM) implies that computational complexity and memory requirements increase as the square of the number of nodes,confining the application of CBEM to large-scale acoustic problems.A fast multipole boundary element method(FMBEM) for acoustics was developed to solve this problem.The basic principles are expounded and simulation procedures given.Then it was successfully applied to predict acoustic characteristics of silencers.Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that this proposed method gives higher accuracy,reduces memory requirements and saves computational time in a given analyzed frequency range.So FMBEM can be applied to deal with large-scale acoustic problems efficiently.
