Comparison of biohydrogen production capacity from different types of fermentation in continuous-flow reactors

Hydrogen production capacity and ecological characteristics of ethanol-type and butyrate-type fermentation were investigated in continuous-flow reactor.It was found that NADH/NAD~+equilibrium was the main reason leading to the difference on hydrogen production capacity in the two fermentation types.At organic loading rate(OLR) of 40 kg/(m~3·d),microflora of ethanol-type fermentation had relatively high hydrogen production rate,and the maximum specific hydrogen production rate was 550 ml/(gVSS·d),which was 3.3 times higher than that of butyrate-type fermentation.Ethanol-type fermentation is more suitable for biohydrogen industrialization than butyrate-type fermentation based on their fermentative characters,operating conditions and costs.
