Discussion on joint strength theory of intact loess

There still no joint strength theory that can judge the tensile failure and the shear failure of soil.In this paper,taking Luochuan loess as the object of study,the ultimate strength of intact loess under different stress states is measured by using direct uniaxial tensile experiment,uniaxial compressive experiment and triaxial test(UU test).The reasonable joint strength theory for intact loess is fitted and derived.The results show that the tensile strength of intact loess with the same water content is 8.74 kPa which is the smallest,the compressive strength is larger than it and the shear strength is the largest.The ultimate tensile strain of intact loess is small,the ultimate compressive strain is larger,and the soil behaves brittle failure,but with the increase of the confining pressureσ3,the strain during the failure increases,and the brittle failure is transformed into ductile failure.Quadratic parabola strength theory can be used to judge the tensile failure and shear failure of intact loess with different water content reasonably.The results of uniaxial compressive experiment and triaxial test can be used to obtain the equation of quadratic parabola and inverse the tensile strength reasonably.
