Mixotrophic Cultures of Anabaena sp. PCC7120

Photoautotrophic and mixotrophic cultures of Anabaena sp. PCC7120 were carriedout in flasks with initial glucose concentrations in the range from 0 to 30 g/L and at high[160 μE/(m2.s)] and low light intensities [16 uE/(m2.s)] respectively. The maximal algal celldensity at high light intensity (0.92-3.1 g/L) was notably greater than that obtained at lowlight intensity (0.11~0.58 g/L), and high light intensity caused shorter logarithmic phase inmixotrophic culture. In the range from 0 to 18 g/L, higher glucose concentration favoredcell growth more markedly, whereas the concentrations above 18 g/L presented only limitedimprovement on cell growth at both high and low light intensities. In addition, high lightintensity enhanced the uptake of glucose by algal cells, but cell yields on glucose decreased withthe elevated glucose concentrations at high light intensity.
