Surface Modification of Fe_3O_4 Nano Particles and Its Applications in Preparation of Magnetic Alumina Catalyst Supports

Fe3O4 magnetic nano-particles coated with silica are synthesized. Through XRD, SEM and TEM analyses, the structure of particles and the cell crystallite size of Fe3O4 cores are investigated. The amorphous SiO2 coatings prevent the agglomeration and growth of Fe3O4 micro-crystals, and favor the increase of weather resistance. The VSM results show that these kinds of composite particles exhibit superparamagnetic behavior with zero coercivity and remanence. Then the magnetic spheroidal alumina catalyst supports containing these magnetic composite particles are prepared by an internal gelation process. The SiO2 coatings of the Fe3O4 prevent the reaction between Fe3O4 and Al2O3 during the sintering process and keep the superparamagnetic behavior of the catalyst supports. The magnetic properties of the supports vary with the transform of magnetic cores.
