Effect of Seed Aerosol on the Growth of Secondary Organic Aerosol from the Photooxidation of Toluene

Hydroxyl radical(OH-) initiated photooxidation of toluene was carried out in a home-made smog chamber.Four kinds of seed aerosol such as ammonium sulfate,ammonium nitrate,sodium silicate and calcium chloride were introduced into the smog chamber to investigate the influence on the formation of secondary organic aerosol(SOA).It was found that the low concentration of seed aerosol was in favor of the production of SOA.In the beginning of the reaction,seed aerosol increased the overall yield of SOA.However,as the reaction time prolonged,seed aerosol prohibited the formation of SOA.In the case of the same concentration,sodium silicate seed aerosol presented the same effect on the formation of SOA as ammonium nitrate.Potential of influence on generation of SOA for the four kinds of seed aerosols was:calcium chloride sodium silicate,ammonium nitrate ammonium sulfate.
