Research on the Creeping Wave Detection Technology in Butt Circumferential Weld of Steel Tube Tower Thin-wall Pipe

The welding joint of ultra-high voltage alternating current(UHV AC) transmission steel tube tower possesses some characteristic, such as thin wall and large width of weld reinforcement, using the conventional ultrasonic testing easily causes leak detection. Creeping wave testing technique has characteristics of wide coverage and convenient operation. In order to verify its reliability, the thin-wall pipe butt circumferential weld specimen was detected by adopting creeping wave and radiographic inspection two methods, and compared the test results. The result showed that creeping wave testing is sensitive to incomplete fusion, crack, but not good at weld porosity; for the same defect, it can roughly judge the crack orientation according to the testing waveform in both sides, so as to improve the accuracy of the detection results. The weld toe should be burnished before the testing, and the distance between detector and weld center should less than 15 mm.
