ANN-Based 3-D Back Analysis of Initial Stress in Rock Masses

JIANG Zhong ming, XU Wei ya, SHAO Jian fu(Research Institute of Geotechnical Engineering, Hohai Univ., Nanjing 210098, China)  
The methods for calculation of the initial earth stress in rock masses are reviewed. In combination with the theory of Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), a new approach is proposed for the calculation of the initial earth stress. Based on the 3 D FEM, the new approach integrates the merits of other methods and takes into account the factors affecting the initial stress. A case study is given to show the reasonability of the present method. In consideration of the influence of faults on the initial stress, the approach may help reveal the distribution of measured initial earth stress.
