Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by bulgy vermiculites in constructed wetlands

The influence of operating parameters on the removal rates of nitrogen and phosphorus by bulgy vermiculites in the upflow constructed wetlands was studied in laboratory.Results indicate that the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus depends on the absorption capacity of bulgy vermiculites in the early period and the degradability of microorganisms in the later period.The removal rates of nitrogen and phosphorus by bulgy vermiculites with membrane were 9.8% and 9.5% higher than by those without membrane.When the influent concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous were,respectively,0-100 mg/L and 0-8 mg/L,the removal rates increased along with the increase of the concentration.When the concentrations exceeded the range,the adsorption capacity of the fillings declined and the degradability of bio-membrane increased.The bulgy vermiculites are excellent fillings for constructed wetlands.The formation of membrane on bulgy vermiculites can effectively improve the removal rates of nitrogen and phosphorus.
