Dou E’s Tragedy in Terms of Belief

GUO Hong-ya (School of Literature, Henan University, Kaifeng 475001, China)
Dou E is the protagonist in the tragedy Dou E’s Injustice. Her tragic fate can be attributed to both social and ethical reasons. As viewed from the perspective of personal belief in this paper, Dou’s conscious and self-willing abeyance of the feudal ethics makes her believe that her adherence to the filial and faithful maxims will reward her with happiness in her next life. Such a belief is the most direct reason why she distorts her personality, strangles her true self and steps towards her personal tragedy.
