DETERMINATION OF THALLIUM AND CADMIUM IN ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES BY GRAPHITE FURNACE ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROMETRY USING SUSPENSION SAMPLING TECHNIQUE IN COMBINATION WITH MATRIX MODIFICATION

A method has been developed for the determination of thallium and cadmium in environmental samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spec-trometry using suspension sampling technique in combination with matrix modification. When palladium and ascorbic acid was used as a matrix modifier for the determination of thallium interferences from sample matrices were greatly reduced and aqueous standard calibration was feasible. If no matrix modification was used suspension sampling technique for direct determination of cadmium was unsuccessful. When ammonium sulphate matrix modification was employed a calibration procedure using a standard reference material, in which cadmium content was certified, was still required since the different atomization mechanism of cadmium in solid and aqueous solution. The recommended mathod has been applied for the determination of thallium and cadmium in coal fly ash, soil and sediment samples, and a good agreement was achieved between the data obtained by this method and the certified values.
