Fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerator was melted at different tempe rature; the physical changes of microstructure and morphology were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM)and compared with the samples before and after melting treatment. It showed that the molten sample became full smooth, m uch harder in surface structure, while the section of the molten sample had lust rous or no apparent aperture. The fly ash can be completely melted. The changes of chemical composition and melting effect by X-Ray diffractometry for the ash and molten slag were made. The results indicated that the main crystalline p hases of raw fly ash were halite, sylvite, quartz, calcite, anhydrite, larnite a nd mayenite. The main crystallized phases of molten ash were identified as CaS a nd gehlenite. Moreover, there were calcium oxide and diopside and other compound s. The leaching test on the residues after melting treatment showed that the fly ashes were successfully detoxified to meet the environmental regulatory require ments.
