The total concentration and chemical speciation of heavy metals(Cu,Zn,Pb,Cd,Cr,As and Hg) in the surface sediments collected from the mainstream and several tributaries of Yangtze basin were studied using BCR sequential extraction procedure, HCl-HNO3-HF digestion method and AAS. The results showed that the heavy metals (except Zn) pollution in sedimentary environment were increasing. Cd was mainly associated with exchangeable fraction. So, the quality and chemical forms of sedimentary heavy metals implied that there were the higher ecological risks on the aquatic environment of Yangtze basin. We also used the Hierachical cluster analysis to improve the understanding of the characteristics of heavy metals in sediment. The statistic analysis data revealed that the sedimentary Zn, Pb and Cu have the similar origin, and Cd,As,Hg and Cr were clustered together in the another group.
