REMOVAL OF HEAVY METALS AND BROMINE IN RIVER AND GROUND WATER BY NANOSCALE ZERO-VALENT IRON

Nanoscale zero iron(NZVI) was synthesized with a specific surface area of 49.16 m2 · g-1,and a diameter from 20 to 40 nm.Laboratory batch experiments were conducted to investigate its removal efficiency of heavy metals and bromine ions in Xi River water and the groundwater in villages adjacent to the river.The study demonstrated that NZVI was efficient in removing Cr(Ⅵ),Cu(Ⅱ),Cd(Ⅱ),Pb(Ⅱ),and As(Ⅲ) from aqueous solution containing 920 μg · L-1 As(Ⅲ) and 100 μg · L-1 heavy metals,for which 99% was removed within 30 min using 1.25 g · L-1 NZVI.Over 99% Mn and Zn,but only 10% bromine ion from Xi River water or groundwater were removed at the end of the experiment.Additionally,the kinetics for the removal of Mn(Ⅱ) using NZVI followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic expression.The surface-area-normalized rate coefficient(kSA) was 0.3435 mL · m-2 · min-1.
