Effects of Cr(Ⅵ) on the reproduction and antioxidant enzyme activities of Eisenia fetida with aged soils

In the current study,the effects of Cr( Ⅵ) on the reproduction and antioxidant enzyme activities of Eisenia fetida in artificial soil were investigated. The results showed that the cocoon production and number of juvenile were inhibited significantly as increasing Cr( Ⅵ) concentrations in both freshly spiked and aged soils. The EC 50 values of cocoon production were 62. 32 mg·kg- 1and 86. 54 mg·kg- 1. In addition,the EC 50 values of number of juvenile were 49. 92 mg·kg- 1and 66. 40 mg·kg- 1,respectively. In the group of Cr( Ⅵ) contaminated soil,the activities of superoxide dismutase( SOD),catalase( CAT) and peroxidase( POD) were different in the aged soils. In the early exposure,CAT and POD activities were markedly elevated. However,after a longer exposure period,the activities of them had been inhibited. On the other hand,the activity of SOD was not affected throughout the test. The results suggested that the variations in antioxidant enzyme activities of CAT and POD could be used as responsive biomarkers for oxidative stress caused by Cr( Ⅵ) in a soil environment. This study indicated that the soil aging leads to effects on the toxicity of Cr( Ⅵ) and it should be taken into consideration when toxicity tests of Cr( Ⅵ) were carried out.
