Study on biodegradation of phenanthrene enhanced by nonionic surfactant Tween-80

Study on the effects of nonionic surfactant Tween 80 on solution and degradation process of phenanthrene is reported. The results show that Tween 80 can distinctly increase the solubility of phenanthrene. During the biodegradation process, Tween 80 can be utilized by microbe as a carbon source. But high concentration of Tween 80 solution will slow the degradation of phenanthrene, and leave a relatively high amount of residual surfactant and microbe when degradation of phenanthrene is near completion.
