Measurement and analytical techniques for NO_x in auto-exhaust

In order to analyze the catalyst activity for NO x in auto_exhaust, a simulative analytical system was constructed. Three methods─chemiluminescent detection(CLD), electrochemical detection(ECD) and colorimetry detection(CMD)─were used to determine the NO x concentration and its composition. The results showed that all three methods can assess the NO or NO 2 content in a certain extent. CLD can give highly precise data with a shorter response time. ECD sensor is an expendable unit, which has to be replaced periodically in order to keep working. Since CMD uses a type of absorbent liquid to absorb enough NO 2 in exhaust for at least several minutes before analyzed by spectrophotometer, it can not operate continuously. Some accessorial units were also prepared to convert NO to NO 2, or NO 2 to NO. In this way, a total NO x can be determined by any of the three methods.
