Study on treatment of fresh leachate from municipal solid waste landfill by SBR

Fresh leachate from simulated municipal solid waste landfill was treated by sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with tapered aeration. The study analyzed the effects of operation parameters on effluent quality and the transfer of the organic carbon released from leachate. It has been learned that the effluent COD concentration was reduced to about 500 mg/L with BOD_5/COD ratio of about 0.14, which was independent of volume load, after fresh leachate was treated by SBR for 24 hours. COD reduction rate was proportional to volume load and reached 95% under volume load of 5.0 kg COD/m3·d. The ratio of transferred organic carbon to CO_2 was proportional to volume load. When volume load rose to 5.0 kg COD/m3·d, nearly 100 % of organic carbon converted to CO_2, and sludge (MLVSS) concentration kept constant. The highest volume load of the SBR was 5.0 kg COD/m3·d with sludge concentration of 7.12 g/L.
