Progress in studies on pollutant removal by microorganisms in constructed wetlands

Constructed wetland systems are increasingly used to treat domestic sewage,industrial wastewater and agricultural runoff in recent years.The wetland treatment process has been gaining international interests and applications due to its low maintenance and operational cost,and high removal capacity.Constructed wetland is a new energy-saving wastewater treatment technology,which is consisted of media,macrophytes and microorganisms.Microorganisms play a key role in purifying wastewater in the constructed wetlands.Recent studies on microorganisms of the constructed wetlands were reviewed,including removal of pollutants and special organic pollutants as well as microbial communities and activities in the ecological systems of the constructed wetlands.And the foreground of the research area was prospected after summarizing the present study state in our country.This research area will become important basic theory of ecosystem service evaluation,ecosystem diagnosis of health and stability in constructed wetlands.
