Removal of total nitrogen from wastewater discharged from a chemical fertilizer plant by Chlorella protothecoides USTB-01

Using an isolated strain of Chlorella protothecoides USTB-01 to remove total nitrogen(TN) from the wastewater discharged from a chemical fertilizer plant was investigated.The results showed that the removal efficiency of TN from wastewater was much improved by adding KH2PO4,Na2CO3 and glucose as phosphorus,inorganic and organic carbon sources to support the rapid growth of C.protothecoides USTB-01.During four day's culture,the biomass of C.protothecoides USTB-01 increased to more than seven times,which was from OD680 nm 0.5 to 3.6.The concentration of TN in wastewater decreased from 125 mg/L to 10.3 mg/L and the removal rate reached 93.1%,which could be discharged complying with TN national discharge standard.This study is very important not only in the treatment of wastewater containing a great amount of nitrogen,but also in the production of C.protothecoides USTB-01 using nitrogen in wastewater discharged from a chemical fertilizer plant.
