Characteristics and Treatment Alternatives of Leachate from Refuse Storage Pit in Municipal Solid Waste Incineration

Monitoring of normal pollutants in leachate from municipal solid waste incineration(MSWI) stockroom were performed for 6 months,and the molecular-weight gradation of dissolved organic matters(DOM) in the leachate as well as the distribution of heavy metals in different molecular-weights of DOM analyzed for the purpose of the disposal and treatment of the leachate.The results show that the leachate from refuse storage pit(LRSP) is highly contaminative.The LRSP is mainly comprised of suspended organic solid(about 23%) and the dissolved organics with molecular weight less than 4 ku(about 88% of the total dissolved organics).The gross of volatile organic matters takes up 50% in less than 4 ku.LRSP is in high content of heavy metals,and the heavy metals content is correlative with dissolved matter,especially for Zn and Ni(more than 90%).The distribution of heavy metals(except for As and Hg) has close relationship with the organic matter content.Based on the characteristics of LRSP,it was recommended that the LRSP could be treated by coagulation or anaerobic-aerobic biological treatment techniques.
