Health Risk Assessment on Semivolatile Organic Compounds in Water of Yangtze Estuary Area

The organic pollution of Yangtze Estuary area has been more and more serious during recent years.The health risk assessment method of USEPA was modified to preliminarily assess the health risks caused by the semivolatile organic compounds(SVOCs) in Yangtze Estuary area.The results show that the non-carcinogenic risk indexes of SVOCs are far below 1 and the non-carcinogenic risk indexes of single-ring aromatic substances all around 10~(-3),which is higher than other substances.The carcinogenic risks are all below 10~(-4).More attentions should also be paid to the three organic pollutants,hexachlorobenzene,bis(2-chloroethyl)ether and carbazole,whose carcinogenic risks are around 10~(-5),higher than that of other pollutants.According to suggested values of USEPA,it can be considered that single SVOCs in Yangtze Estuary area would not cause obvious health hazard to human beings currently.Due to the lack of related research data,the combined health effect of different kinds of organic compounds cannot be assessed.
