Effects of Methanogens and Methanotrophs Distribution on Methane Emissions from a Soil-Plant System

Methane(CH4) emissions are closely related with amounts of methanogens and methanotrophs.The mechanism of CH4 generation was investigated by using the fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH) technique to analyze quantitatively the amount of methanogens and methanotrophs in the active layers of soil in a soil-plant ecological system planted with Phragmites australis and Zizania latifolia.The results showed that plant cultivation was favorable to microbial growth;methanotrophs was mainly concentrated in the plant rhizosphere;and,the amount of methanogens was higher than methanotrophs.Air temperature fluctuation and ORP greatly affected the CH4 emissions from the soil-plant ecological system.The annual average amount of CH4 emissions was 22.9 mg/(m2·h).The CH4 emissions peak occurred in the summer,and was up to 185.6 mg/(m2·h).These results reveal that plant species and their growth enhance the production of plant rhizosphere secretion,and provide more substrate for methanogens,therefore stimulating CH4 emissions.
