Effects of seeding sludge on hydrogen production from anaerobic fermentation of food wastes with and without the buffering additives

Series of experiments were conducted to determine the effects of seeding sludge (vermicompost sludge, anaerobic granular sludge, angry pool sludge and river sediments) on hydrogen production from anaerobic fermentation of food waste, with and without adding the buffering mixture (alkaline material, surface active agent and enzymes). Without the buffering additives, the effectiveness order of the seeding sludge was granular sludgeriver sedimentsvermicompost sludgeangry pool sludge; with the buffering additives, the order was anaerobic granular sludgeangry pool sludgevermicompost sludgeriver sediments. In the fermentation runs employing the anaerobic granular sludge seed, the maximum hydrogen yield were both significantly enhanced by the additional buffering mixture, from 10.11 to 33.72 mL/g. The buffering additives raised the initial pH of the reactor and maintained its pH during the fermentation process to enable the rapid and steady production of hydrogen.
