IODINE IN ENVIRONMENT AND ENDEMIC GOITER

Endemic goiter is with a biogeochemical origin. From middle of the nineteenth to early twentieth century, the theory on which endemic goiter results from iodine deficiency was established by works of Chatin, Baumann, Prevost and Marine et al.. It has been proved by preventive practice and scientific research later and is universally recognized as such. In 1966, however, Suzuki reported that endemic goiter is caused by food containing high iodine. From the point view of medical geography, this paper deals with model of iodine content in drinking water with relation to incidence of endemic gioter, classification of goiter-forming provinces with iodine abnormality, and measures taken in production to prevent endemic goiter.
