Study on the extraction and purification of microcystins

The methods for extracting and purifying microcystin (MCs) in dry cyanobacterial cells taken from Dianchi Lake, Yunnan Province, were studied in this paper. 40% methanol-water solution was found to be an optimum solution for effectively extracting MC-RR and MC-LR from cyanobacterial cells among different ratios of methanol when the concentration of dry cyanobacterial cells was 20?g·L~(-1). After the extraction solution of 40% methanol containing MCs was passed through a cartridge (Waters, OASIS~(TM) HLB Cartridge), MCs were purified by the elution with 70% methanol, and 7.3% and 3.5% purities of MC-RR and MC-LR were obtained. By collecting the achromatic fraction of the elution after blue-green and orange-yellow color elution, MC-RR and MC-LR with the purities of 28.6% and 12.9% were obtained.
