EFFECTS OF NICKEL, ZINC AND ALUMINUM ON THE GROWTH AND ENZYME ACTIVITIES OF GREEN ALGA SELENASTRUM CAPRICORNUTUM

The effects of Ni, Zn, and Al at various concentrations on the growth, ATP level and enzyme activities of green alga S. capricornutum were investigated. The results showed that the growth of alge was strongly inhibited after exposed to Ni, Zn and Al, while protein synthesis seemed not to be suppressed at all the tested concentrations. It was also shown that some enzyme activities per mg protein were lower as the ion concentration was higher. ATP level was lower in the algal cells exposed to metals compared with that of the control. The mechanism of the action on enzyme activity by heavy metal ions was suggested and it is believe that the balance of the availability of nutrients for optimum algal growth was disturbed with presence of metals at high concentration. The correlation between the response of the growth and several enzyme activities to metals was discussed.
