Study on the Changes of the Activities of Myeloperoxidase and Glutathione S-transferase in Plasma of the Population in Coal-burning Fluorosis Area

Objective To study the relationship between the activities of myeloperoxidase(MPO),glutathione S-transferase(GSTs) in plasma and oxidative stress among population in coal-burning fluorosis area.Methods Two hundred and forty-five residents were selected from Yachi Town,the coal-burning fluorosis area without cooking stoves improvement,as the non- intervention group,two hundred and forty residents were selected from Changchun Town,the coal-burning fluorosis area with cooking stoves improvement,as the intervention group,two hundred and forty-seven residents were selected from Baiyunshan Town,Changshun County,the non-endemic fluorosis area,as the control group,in Bijie,Guizhou Province,China,during Jun.-Aug.,2007.The activities of MPO and GSTs in plasma among population were determined by colorimetric analysis with Spectrophotometer.Results The activity of MPO in plasma of population decreased in the order of non-intervention group intervention groupcontrol group,and showed statistically significant difference among three groups(P0.05,P0.01)。 The activity of GSTs in plasma of population increased in the order of non-intervention group intervention groupcontrol group,and showed statistically significant difference among three groups(P0.05,P0.01).Both of them showed no gender difference(P0.05).Conclusion Excessive fluorine intake may cause unbalanced free radical metabolism.It suggests that the intervention on fluorine intake will contribute to resume the balance of oxidation.
