Nitrate and nitrite accumulation in vegetables in high-nitrogen fertilization areas

Objective To explore the pollution of nitrate and nitrite in vegetables in high-nitrogen fertilization areas. Methods A total of 136 samples of 27 kinds of vegetables, locally grown, were collected monthly from investigated area in upper reaches of Shaying River during July-October 2011.The levels of nitrate and nitrite in samples were determined and health risk assessment was performed also. Results The levels of nitrate in vegetables was higher in August and September,the lowest in October. The levels of nitrite in vegetables was the highest in September, lower in July and August,the lowest in October. The over standard rate of nitrite(4.00 mg/kg) in vegetables was 41.67% during July-September,and decreased to 0% in October.Health risk index was 1 for nitrate in vegetables except October, and 1 for nitrite during July-October. Conclusion Nitrate and nitrite accumulation in vegetables in the investigated high-nitrogen fertilization areas are higher, and nitrate presents a certain health risk.
