Objective To investigate the incidence of lumbocrural pain in the navy escort personnel in the Gulf of Aden,so as to provide evidence for the development of preventive measures. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted in the two groups of the navy escort personnel in the Gulf of Aden.Group A contained 114 commissioned and enlisted of a certain naval vessel, who were deployed there for a duration of 6 months.Group B was composed of 109 people who were also out there for a duration of 9 months.Incidence and severity of lumbocrural pain were statistically analyzed and were then compared between the 2 groups. Results Facts proved that the incidence of lumbocrural pain among the commissioned and enlisted in Group B was obviously higher than that in Group A.In Group A,the number of people with lumbocrural pain was 22,with the incidence being19.3%,while 41 in Group B developed lumbocrural pain, with the incidence being 37.6%.In the 2 groups, the number of the cases that developed lumbocrural pain within 3 months after deployment was 16,with the incidence being 7.2%.Of the 2 groups,Group A had 9 cases(7.9%),while Group B had 7 cases(6.4%).There were altogether 28 people that developed lumbocrural pain within 3 to 6 months after deployment.Of the 2 groups,Group A had 13 cases, with the incidence being 11.4%,while Group B had 15 cases, with the incidence being 13.8%.After 6 months of deployment at sea,the number of people that developed lumbocrural pain was 19 in Group B.Total incidence and interval incidence were closely correlated with the duration of the escort mission. Conclusion Prolonged oceangoing shipboard personnel had a higher incidence of lumbocrural pain. The longer they were deployed at sea,the higher the incidence. With the prolonging of deployment, the interval incidence of lumbocrural pain would obviously increase. This indicated that the prevention and treatment of lumbocrural pain among prolonged deployed shipboard personnel was a problem worth further close study.
