Novel Structure and Character Connotations:the Innovative Mechanism in Ma Qiao Dictionary

YANG Jie-qiong(Department of Chinese, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310012, China)
Since its publication, Ma Qiao Dictionary has become a favorite with critics and literary scholars because of its special stylistic form and its writer's philosophical considerations on "language and existence" . Nevertheless, the author of this paper attempts to probe into the deep structure pattern behind the special pattern of Ma Qiao Dictionary and the narrative angle and manner of the writer by utilizing the methodology of "reinterpretation" against the grand literary background of contemporary literature posterior to the 1990's. Moreover, an analysis is also made of the reality of some key characters in the novel and of various factors leading to their tragic destiny and the metaphoric implications of three protagonists such as Ben Yi, Yan Wu, Ma Ming, etc. are touched upon, and the intrinsic ideal of Han Shaogong's spirit pursuit—an interest in reality and due attention to masses of lower social strata—is tracked down.
