Investigation of Family Environment and Parenting Pattern of Patients with Schizophrenia

Objective To explore the family environment and parenting pattern of the patients with schizophrenia, aiming to give psychological interference to improve social function of schizophrenia. Methods One hundred and twenty patients with schizophrenia and 120 normal controls were assessed with the family environment scale (FES-CV) and Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran (EMBU). Results Compared with normal controls, the scores of factors of the cohesion, emotion expression, success and organization of the schizophrenics family were lower (P0.01 or P0.05), while the scores of factors of the conflict and control were higher in the patients. There was significant difference between the two groups (all P0.01). However the scores of factors being cared was lower in patients’ parents. Compared with normal controls, the scores of factors of punishment and rejection of the schizophrenics were higher (all P0.01), at the same time, the scores of the over intervention of father and over partialness of mother were higher in the patients (P0.05 or P0.01).Conclusion There were many problems in the family environment and parenting patterns of schizophrenia patients, which could play an important role in the onset of the schizophrenia. It is necessary to give psychological interference to the patients with schizophrenia to improve their social functions.
