Effect of Length of Access Hole on Behavior of Steel Beam-column Moment Connections

The effect of enlarging the length of access hole on the behavior of steel beancolumn moment connections was studied throuth 3D nonlinear finiteelement analyses of connection subassemblies.The analytical results show that increasing the length of access hole remarkably minimizes the potential fracture at the groove welds of beamcolumn interface and the root of access hole,therefore the potential of brittle failures in the beam flange is reduced.But over increasing the length of the access hole will lead to the loss of lateral stability of beam.
