Synthesis and Performance of CeO_2 Nanocrystallines by Precipitation Method

Applying chemical precipitation method, CeO_2 nanocrystallines were synthesized by heating the precursor Ce_2 (CO_3)_3·H_2O obtained from Ce(NO_3)_3·6H_2O and (NH_4)_2 CO_3·H_2O with a little amount of PEG4000 as the surfactant. The changes in the performance of CeO_2 nanocrystalline samples were investigated during isothermic heating at different temperatures by XRD, DTA/TG, TEM, BET, impurity content analysis, the grain size calculation through the Scherrer formula from the CeO_2 diffraction peak half-widths of XRD patterns and the relative density measurement. The result showed that CeO_2 nanocrystallines of the cubic crystal system were formed entirely by heating precursor at 300 ℃ for 1 hour. The space group was Fm3m, its average grain size was about 5 nm, the particle size was about 20 nm, BET surface area was 140.61 m~2/g, the pore size distribution was 5~15 nm, the maximal pore size was 9.3 nm, and the purity was higher than or equal to 99.97%. With the rise of calcination temperature, the grain size and the relative density of CeO_2 nanocrystalline increased obviously, and at the same time, the surface area decreased.
