Synthesis of Benzyltoluene as Heat conducting Oil

Chen Shengzong Chen Xin Chen Rui Chen Junyan (College of Chemistry and Chemical Enginecring,Hunan Univ,410082,Changsha,P R China)  
Monobenzyltoluene(MBT) and dibenzyltoluene(DBT) were prepared from benzylchloride and toluene via Friedel Crafts Reaction,by the catalysis of ferric oxide.The yield is 95%,when the mole ratio of toluene to benzylchloride is 6∶1,the quantity of the catalyst used is 1.5 gram per mole benzylchloide and the reaction time is 6 hours at 100 ℃. The obtained MBT and DBT have good heat stabilities,broad range of operating temperature and neither corrosion behaviors nor odors.They are fine heat conducting oil with good comprehensive properties.
