Synthesis of Temperature-sensitive PNIPAAm with Low Polydispersity by RAFT Polymerization

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAAm) is synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization(RAFT) using AIBN as initiator,DMF as solvent,BDTAC as chain transfer agent.Structure and number-average molecular weight of PNIPAAm are characterized by means of nuclear magnetic resonance(1H-NMR) and gel permeation chromatography(GPC).It is found that the molecular weight distribution of the resulting PNIPAAm is low when the [CAT]0/[I]0 ratios are varied between 20:1 and 5:1.The PNIPAAm shows a low critical solution temperature(LCST) in water.
