The variations of daily temperatures at 5,10,15 and 20 cm from the surface soil with both of the sowing dates on4/1,5/4,and/6/10(month/day),and the growth stages at tillering stages(TS),booting stage(BS)and milk ripe stage(MRS)were measured.The variations were more manifest among the sowing dates and the geowth stages than that of the profile(Table l).The mesh bag method of Steen(1991)was used to study the correlation between the soil temperatures profile and the morphological development and metabolic ac-tivity of the root systems ofthe intersubspecific hybrid rice PE and the inter varietal hyborid rice S63 was included as a control.The temperature at 5 cm under soil in which the adventi-tious roots developing regimes had significant positive correlation with the root numbers of per plant at TS(r=0.973,0.985).The correlation between the shoot:root dryweight ratio and the average temperature to the depth of 20 cm was verypositively significant at TS(r=0.990,0.999),but negatively significant at MRS(r=-0.806,一0.915).The decreasing percentage both of SOD activity and root oxidizing activity from BS to MRS had significant positive correlation with the temperature at 15 cm under soil( r=0.973,0.988),but had sig-nificant negative correlation with the seed set rate and grain yield(r=一0.891~一0. 900).Thus, the negative effects of high soil temperature on yield may via accelerating the senes- cence of the root systems.It’s also found that the uptake of K was no difference between PE and S63 and was temperature independent throughout the growth period duration. It was concluded that the effect of soil temperature on the growth,metabolic activity of root sys-tems depend on the stages of growth and the soil profile.
