Study on the Ammonia Nitrogen's Absorption by Expanded Vermiculite

The present study was conducted to determine the adsorption capacity of NH4-N by expanded vermiculite and to test the influence of pH value,temperature,ammonium concentration and applied quantity of expanded vermiculite minerals on the removal rate of ammonium.The saturated ammonium adsorption capacity of expanded vermiculite was found to be 17.32 mg·g-1,and the removal rate of NH4-H is over 65% within pH4.0~7.0.If the NH4-H density is increasing from 200 mg·L-1,the removal rate of NH4-N will be rising.The basic data and theoretical discussion from the present study support the use of expanded vermiculite as a new medium for removal of nitrogen in wastewater treatment.
