Analysis on Variation Characteristics and Driving Forces of Annual Runoff and Sediment in the Xiangjiang River over the Past 60 Years

Evolution characteristics and laws of annual runoff and sediment were revealed by means of Mann- Kendall,wavelet analysis and average difference T methods,based on long-time series data of annual runoff and sediment at key stations along the Xiangjiang River from 1951 to 2011,and the driving forces were analyzed. The results are as follows:( 1) The amount of annual runoff has a slight increasing trend,however the amount of annual sediment has a obvious decrease trend;( 2) The runoff process does not show mutation characteristics. However, the annual sediment process shows mutation characteristics in 1997,from then the annual sediment has become significant reduction;( 3) The evolution of annual sediment discharge process show obvious stage characteristics. The annual sediment series of the Xiangjiang River can be divided into two kind of phases,including sandy phase during 1951—1996,less sand phase during 1997—2011;( 4) Annual runoff has the periodicity of 35,11,16,6 and 4 years,and annual sediment transportation has the periodicity of 32,11,20,4 and 6 years;( 5) The significant reduction of annual sediment transportation was caused mainly by controlling sand of water resource engineering and water and soil conservation engineering measures.
