The influences of exposure time and concentrations of Cd~(2+) on the activities of different antioxidant enzymes(including superoxide dismutase SOD,catalase CAT and peroxidase POD) in Arundo donax L.were studied. The results showed that the activities of the enzymes were significantly increased when the Arundo donax L.was just treated with Cd~(2+) stress at beginning, and decreased as both the exposure time and the concentrations of Cd~(2+) increasing. The results suggest that in terms of seedlings of Arundo donax L.,the activities of the three enzymes will be higher than that of checksin early period of Cd~(2+) stress, which indicates that Cd~(2+) stress will lead to improvement of anti-oxidant ability of the seedlings,as is called the activation effect. With the plants growth, the metal will migrate into the body of plants, which will caurse physiological damage and exhibit the inhibitory effect. In the addition, the results also show that the decrease degree depends on the concentrations and the existence time of Cd~(2+).
