The Progress of Genetic Research on the Number of Branches per Panicle in Rice

The number of branches per panicle plays an important role in rice yield. This paper summarized the development of genetic research on the number of primary and secondary branches per panicle. The previous results indicated that the number of branches per panicle,with high heritability and coefficient of variation,were controlled by quantitative trait loci(QTLs), and the gene expression of the straits was affected by the water stress, the year differentiation, the genes epistatic interaction and the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. It showed that the number of branches per panicle had a positive coefficient with yield. It would be better to select the number of primary and secondary branches per panicle in the early generations and in the late generations in cross breeding in rice,respectively.
