PROTECTION OF MURINE BONE MARROW GRANULOPOIESIS FROM IRRADIATION GFFECT BY LITHIUM

The whole body of mice were exposed to various doses (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 Gy) of 60Co irradiation, with the administration of Li2CO3 (1 mEq/L, 1 ml, Ip) immediately after the irradiation and on the two successive days (Li grouup) the other group without Li treatment as control. CFU-S and CFU-GM were assayed on the sixth day after irradiation. The production rate of CFU-S and CFU-GM would becrease after irradiation, but the number of CFU-S (at 0.5-2.0 Gy) and CFU-GM (at 0.5-4.0 Gy) of Li group were significantly higher than that of the control. The radiation sensitivity of CFU-GM of the Li group (Do = 1. 65±0.17Gy) was significantly lower than that of control (Do = 1.20±0.14 Gy). The production rate of CFU-GM murine bone marrow cell (BMC) suspension exposed to irradiation in vitro was also decreased, but this could be ameliorated Significantly(at 0.5-2.0 Gy)with Li2CO3. It is suggested that lithium exerts certain protective effects on granulopoiesis of BMC and might be useful in radiotherahy,
