Clinical effect of acupuncture combined with traditional Chinese medicines in treatment of lumbar muscle strain: a report of 35 cases

Objective: To observe the clinical effect of kidney- tonifying and blood stasis- removing acupuncture combined with oral administration of traditional Chinese medicines( TCMs) in the treatment of lumbar muscle strain. Methods: A total of 105 patients with lumbar muscle strain were equally divided into acupuncture group,TCM group,and acupuncture plus TCM group. The acupuncture group received kidney- tonifying and blood stasis- removing acupuncture,the TCM group was orally given kidney- tonifying and blood stasis- removing TCMs,and the acupuncture plus TCM group received kidney- tonifying and blood stasis- removing acupuncture and oral administration of kidney- tonifying and blood stasis- removing TCMs. The improvements in symptoms were evaluated; Pain Rating Index( PRI) was statistically analyzed; lower back muscle endurance was measured. The treatment outcomes of the three groups were compared. Results: After treatment,the acupuncture plus TCM group had significantly higher cure rate and cure and marked response rate than the acupuncture group and TCM group( P 0. 05); all the three groups had significantly decreased PRI and significantly improved lower back muscle endurance,and the acupuncture plus TCM group had significantly more improvements( P 0. 05). Conclusion:Acupuncture combined with TCMs have a better clinical effect than acupuncture or TCMs alone in the treatment of lumbar muscle strain.
